Two Kinds of VIN Information
When you decode a VIN, there are really two layers of information, and it helps to know the difference.
- VIN structure. Every VIN follows the ISO 3779 standard, so its 17 characters always encode the country, manufacturer, model year, plant, and a serial number. This works for any VIN, instantly, without looking anything up.
- The real vehicle record. Beyond the structure, there is the actual factory record: the specific make, model, trim, body style, and engine that car was built with. This has to come from a real database.

Where the Real Data Comes From
The real vehicle details come live from the NHTSA vPIC database, the official US government vehicle catalog. It is free, public, and accurate for US-market vehicles. Because the lookup happens the moment you decode, you always get current data, and because the VIN never leaves your control beyond that lookup, there is no account or tracking involved.

How to Decode a VIN Step by Step
- Find the VIN. It is on the dashboard by the windshield, the driver’s door jamb, and the title. See where to find your VIN.

- Read the structure to confirm the country, maker, and year look right.
- Read the real details for the exact model, trim, and engine.
- Cross-check against the listing or the car. Anything that does not match is worth a question.
Confirm the VIN Is Genuine
