Bulk VIN Validator

Check a whole list of VINs at once, then download the results

Note: This checks that each VIN is correctly formed. It does not confirm a real vehicle exists or look up any history. Your list is checked in your browser and never uploaded.

What Is a Bulk VIN Validator?

A bulk VIN validator checks a whole list of Vehicle Identification Numbers in one go instead of one at a time. Paste your list or upload a file, and it tells you which VINs are correctly formed, which are not, and exactly why. It also spots duplicates, which is handy when a list has been merged from several sources.

If you only have one number to check, the single VIN Validator is quicker. This tool is for the times you have a spreadsheet, a database export, or a pile of test data.

How to Validate Many VINs

  1. Add your list - Paste VINs into the box, or click Upload file and choose a TXT or CSV file. For a CSV with other columns, head the VIN column VIN so only that column is read.
  2. Choose the check digit option - Leave it unticked for North American VINs. Tick it for European or Asian VINs.
  3. Click Validate VINs - Your summary and results table appear straight away.
  4. Filter and download - Show only the invalid rows, then download the full results as a CSV, or just the valid or invalid VINs as text files.

What Each VIN Is Checked For

CheckWhat it testsTypical failure
LengthExactly 17 charactersA missed or doubled character
CharactersOnly letters and digits, never I, O, or QThe letter O typed instead of a zero
Check digitPosition 9 matches the ISO 3779 calculationA single mistyped character anywhere
DuplicatesThe same VIN appearing more than onceLists merged from two systems

The check digit is the strongest test, because changing almost any single character changes what it should be. To see how the number is worked out, try the VIN Check Digit Calculator.

Validating European and Asian VINs

The check digit is required in North America, but not in every market. Many European and Asian manufacturers use position 9 for something else, so a perfectly genuine VIN from those markets can fail the check digit and still be correct. For those lists, tick Skip the check digit. The tool then only checks length and characters. We explain the background in how to decode a European import VIN, and how other countries name and format the number in what a VIN is called around the world.

What a Valid Result Means

Valid means the VIN is correctly formed, nothing more. A typo can still slip through roughly one time in eleven, and a made-up number can be built to pass. It says nothing about whether a real car exists, its history, or who owns it. Treat the result as a data-quality filter, not proof of anything.

Who Uses a Bulk VIN Validator

  • Developers and testers - Clean test data, or confirm a generated list is valid. See how to generate test VINs and how to validate a VIN in code.
  • Dealers and fleets - Check an inventory import before it goes into your system.
  • Data teams - Find typos and duplicates in an exported list.
  • Insurance and finance staff - Catch mistyped VINs before they cause a rejected record.

Limits and Privacy

You can check up to 10,000 VINs per run, from a pasted list or a file of up to 2 MB. If your list is bigger, split it and run it in parts. The check happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, so it is safe to use on a private list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many VINs can I validate at once?

Up to 10,000 per run. Paste them into the box or upload a TXT or CSV file of up to 2 MB.

What file formats can I upload?

Plain text (.txt) and CSV (.csv). VINs can be separated by new lines, commas, semicolons, tabs, or spaces. If your CSV has several columns, name the VIN column VIN in the first row and only that column is checked. Without a VIN header, every value in the file is treated as a VIN.

What does the validator check?

It checks the length (17), the allowed characters (no I, O, or Q), and the check digit in position 9. It also flags duplicates.

Why would a real VIN fail the check digit?

The check digit is required in North America but not everywhere. Many European and Asian VINs use position 9 differently. Tick the skip option to validate those.

Does valid mean the vehicle exists?

No. It means the VIN is correctly formed. It does not confirm a real vehicle, its history, or its ownership.

Are my VINs uploaded or stored?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your list never leaves your computer.
