How to Decode a Chevrolet VIN: Country, Plant, and Engine
Most Chevrolet VINs give away three facts in their first three characters: where the vehicle was assembled, who built it, and what kind of vehicle it is. After that, the rest of the number points to the exact model, engine, and factory. Here is how to read it, using NHTSA’s own data and six sample VINs decoded all the way down.
The data below comes from NHTSA’s public vehicle database (vPIC), the same source behind the “Real Vehicle Details” section of our VIN Decoder.
Read the First Three Characters Like a Sentence
Take 1GC, the start of a Silverado VIN:
- 1 is the country of assembly. A 1 means the United States.
- G means General Motors.
- C is the vehicle type. C is a truck.
Change the first and third characters and you change the meaning. NHTSA lists these Chevrolet codes:

One Model, Two Countries
This is where the first character earns its keep. Here are two 2018 Chevrolet Equinox sample VINs. Same model, same year, same 1.5 L turbocharged engine. Only the first three characters differ:

If you are buying an Equinox, the VIN tells you which country it came from before you open the hood. That matters when you are matching parts, recalls, or a seller’s story.

Positions 4 to 8 describe the model, body, and engine in General Motors’ own codes. The ninth character is the check digit, worked out from the other sixteen. How to calculate a VIN check digit shows the arithmetic step by step.
What the Engine Names Mean
NHTSA reports GM’s own short engine names. The ones in our samples:

Reading the Year and Plant Letters
In the six samples, position 10 gave G for 2016, H for 2017, and J for 2018. Position 11 gave F (Kansas City), Z (Roanoke), R (Arlington), 5 (Bowling Green), L (San Luis Potosi), and 6 (Ingersoll). Plant codes are set by General Motors for each factory, so use them as examples and not as a universal key. The year letters follow our VIN model year codes chart.
