How to Check a Chassis Number in Nigeria (Imported Cars)
A large share of the cars on Nigerian roads were imported used, often called tokunbo. That makes one number especially important: the chassis number, which is the VIN. It links the car in front of you to its customs record, and it is how you find out whether duty was actually paid.
Here is how to find it, what to match it against, and the checks that help you avoid a car with fake or mismatched papers.
Chassis Number or VIN?
In Nigeria both words are used for the same thing. Customs documents, proof of ownership and the vehicle licence all carry it. On a modern imported car it is a 17-character VIN. For the broader picture of how other countries name it, see what a VIN is called around the world.
Be aware that some imports come from Japan, where domestic-market cars use a shorter chassis number instead of a 17-character VIN. Don’t assume a short number is wrong until you know where the car came from.
Why Imported Cars Need Extra Care
When a car arrives from overseas, three things must line up: the car itself, its original export papers, and the local customs clearance. Problems happen when these do not match. Common ones are duty papers for a different vehicle, a number that was altered, or documents that are simply fake.
The rule is simple and strict. The number on the car, the number on the customs papers and the number on the registration must all match, character for character.
Where to Find the Chassis Number
| Location | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Customs papers | The VIN or chassis number on the clearance documents. |
| Vehicle licence and proof of ownership | The same number, printed. |
| Windscreen or dashboard | A plate readable through the glass from outside. |
| Door frame | A label or plate on the door pillar. |
| Body or frame | A stamped number you can see or feel. |

Verify Customs Clearance
Nigeria Customs Service operates a Customs Verification Management System, known as CVMS, launched in October 2025. It lets you look up a vehicle’s clearance and duty payment status using the VIN or chassis number and get an official verification record. A fee applies, so check the current cost on the official Customs site rather than a third-party page.
Two cautions:
- Duty paid on a different vehicle does not cover the one you are buying. Check that the VIN on the verification matches the car.
- Reach the service through Customs’ official channels. Copycat sites exist for anything that involves a fee.
Systems and portals change. Use the official source for the current process, and ask a licensed clearing agent or a trusted mechanic if you are unsure.
Match Everything Before You Pay
- Read the chassis number on the car.
- Compare it to the customs documents.
- Compare it to the registration or vehicle licence.
- Look closely at the stamped number for grinding, filler or fresh paint.
- Confirm the seller’s name matches the owner on the papers.
If any number differs, stop. Even a one-character difference is enough to walk away until it is explained in writing. See how to check if a car is stolen by VIN and how VIN cloning scams work for what altered numbers can mean.
Read the Number Itself
The first characters of a 17-character VIN tell you where the car was built. Many used imports come from the US, Europe or Japan, so you might see 1, 4 or 5 for the United States, W for Germany, or J for Japan. Our WMI code reference lists the prefixes. Paste the number into our VIN Decoder to read the country, maker and model year.
The decoder and validator follow the North American standard, so a genuine European or Asian import can fail the check-digit test. We explain why in how to decode a European import VIN and what a VIN check digit is.
What Our Tools Can and Cannot Do
Our tools read the structure of the number. They do not hold customs or registration records, and they cannot tell you whether duty was paid. Use the official customs verification for that, and use the physical car and the papers to catch mismatches.
